Abstract: In this work, graphene-on-diamond hybrids were synthesized using thermal annealing of diamond single crystals and polycrystalline diamond films with thin metal films (Fe, Ti, Mo). The formation of graphite layers on a clean and metal-coated diamond surface was detected by measuring the XPS spectra and the angular dependence of NEXAFS spectra. In addition, Raman spectroscopy was used to distinguish between the surface and bulk carbon in the annealed diamonds. The present study gives insight into the processes of the formation of graphitic layers on the diamond surfaces. We demonstrated that the growth direction of graphene layers over a diamond surface depends on the type of metal layer.
