Abstract: Two new double complex salts [Ni(NH3)6][RuNOCl5] and [Ni(en)3][RuNOCl5] are prepared and structurally characterized. The structure of both compounds is formed by [Ni(NH3)6]2+ and [Ni(en)3]2+ cations and [RuNOCl5]2– anions. The cation and anion polyhedra form alternating cation–anion columns in the [Ni(en)3][RuNOCl5] structure and the CsCl type packing in the [Ni(NH3)6][RuNOCl5] structure. The interaction between cation and anion sublattices is mostly electrostatic in both compounds. Thermolysis of these compounds in a reducing atmosphere leads to the formation of metastable Ni–Ru solid solutions. Thermal degradation of [Ni(en)3][RuNOCl5] begins with the Anderson rearrangements.
