Products of the reaction of α-aminomethylphosphine with a benzothiadiazole substituent (L) and CuCl in
pyridine are studied. It is established that, depending on the crystallization conditions, new solid phases
[CuClL(Py)2] (1) or [CuClL(Py)]2 (2a and 2b) are formed. Compounds 1 and 2a are isolated individually,
compound 2b is isolated in a small amount as a mixture with two previously unknown [Cu(Ph2POO)2(Py)2]
polymorphs (3a and 3b) formed upon the oxidation of L to Ph2POO– and Cu(I) to Cu(II) by air oxygen.
According to the XRD data, compounds 1, 2a, 2b contain the {CuClL(Py)} fragment whose ligand L is
monodentate coordinated by a P atom. The {CuClL(Py)} fragment is supplemented by a pyridine molecule
in 1, and two such fragments are connected by bridging chlorides in 2a and 2b. Photophysical properties of
phases 1 and 2a are studied. Compound 1 has a phosphorescence band which is shifted bathochromically
relative to the main fluorescence band. Emission of 2 is purely fluorescent in character. Such differences
between the photophysical properties may be explained by the fact that transitions in the long-wavelength
region in 1 are due to the mixed metal-to-ligand (MLCT) and halogen-to-ligand (XLCT) charge transfer.
According to the quantum chemical calculations, compound 2a exhibits mainly intraligand-type transitions.
