Abstract: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) are an attractive platform for gas sensor application due to their high specific surface area and unique electrical properties sensitive to surrounding atmosphere. Non-covalent functionalization of the SWCNT surface with organic molecular dopants has little effect on the nanotube structure, while changing the electrical conductivity. Here, we exploit amphoteric doping of SWCNT thin films with tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) donor and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) acceptor organic molecules for gas sensor application. The doping procedure is simple and may become a viable method for large-scale production of SWCNT-based sensors with controlled doping levels. We show that the deposition of organic dopants alters the conductivity of the SWCNT film, creates new effective binding sites for gas molecules, and enhances charge transfer in the system upon analyte molecule adsorption. The TTF-modified SWCNT sensor demonstrated enhanced response to trace nitrogen dioxide with a sensitivity of 52 % ppm−1, while the TCNQ-modified SWCNT sensor was able to detect gaseous ammonia with a sensitivity of −0.22 % ppm−1. The interaction of SWCNTs with TTF and TCNQ is studied using spectroscopy and quantum chemistry methods to understand the influence of organic components on the sensor performance.
