A study was conducted to demonstrate the application of lanthanide paramagnetic probes for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic studies of molecular conformational dynamics in solution to macrocyclic molecules. It was found that lanthanide complexes in solution exhibited a well-defined luminescence, which was characterized by narrow emission bands, large Stokes' shifts, and long excited-state lifetimes. A number of NMR investigations of intramolecular dynamics for lanthanide complexes in aqueous solutions, with other macrocyclic ligands were also considered for comparison. The methodology of paramagnetic Ce, Nd, Pr, Eu, Dy, and Yb probe applications for studying the enthalpy and entropy changes in chemical exchange processes was also investigated. The advantages of the methodology in comparison with DNMR studies of diamagnetic substances were also demonstrated.
