The heat capacity Cp, thermal diffusivity vT , and lattice thermal conductivity jlattof ceramic solid solutions of sesquisulfides Gd 3-xV Gd,xS 4 (0 < x < 0.33) in thetemperature range 300-700 K has been studied. Changing the real structure, namely the concentrations of vacancies (NV ) and deformation (NDc) centers ofpolycrystals, significantly decreases jlatt . A deviation of composition from the sto-ichiometry 2:3 is accompanied by an increase in the specific area of the crystalliteboundaries per unit volume, and, hence, the concentration of deformation centersD C increases. This observation was confirmed by examining the short-range orderdisturbance of the lattice and symmetry environment of the Gd 3+ and S 2 envi-ronment by Raman spectroscopy and the magnetic susceptibility Faraday method. Therefore the thermal diffusivity of gadolinium sesquisulfide is reduced becauseof the mean free path of phonons decrease. As a result, the thermal conductivityof the polycrystalline samples is reduced by 10%.
